The first step is of course to ensure that you have made a fully informed and considered decision.
Please review information on our site and elsewhere and proceed only if you feel confident and happy with your choice.
Patient Instructions Before Vasectomy
You will have a telephone or in-clinic consultation with our doctor prior to your procedure date. If you register online you will have a phone consultation, or you can book an in-person consultation appointment if you prefer.
For clients from outside of Ontario we offer a private payment option. You can go ahead and register online or contact us to confirm the private fee schedule.
Once the consultation is complete your procedure date will be scheduled and it is important that you follow the instructions below. Please also review the After Vasectomy information so you know what to expect afterwards.
The Week Before
Starting seven days before the procedure, do not take any aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medication. These thin the blood somewhat and increase the risk of bleeding.
Do not take any Aspirin or Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs such as Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve, Advil, Naproxen, Diclofenac, etc. Tylenol (acetaminophen) is acceptable.
Two Days Before
Please avoid alcohol for 48 hours before and after your vasectomy.
Wash your scrotum for 2 nights before your procedure and for 2 nights after your procedure with an anti-bacterial wash (the anti-bacterial wash is provided as part of the optional care package, that you can purchase from our office on the day of your consult).
If you opt for the internet registration option and you are having a same day consult/surgery then using the antibacterial wash provided for 2 or 3 nights after your surgery is acceptable. You can review any questions about this or any concerns that you have during your telephone call with Dr. Reddoch.
It’s fine to have sex up until your final antibacterial wash prior to your vasectomy procedure. You will not be able to have sex for a week after your vasectomy, so don’t restrain yourself unnecessarily before the procedure.
For our much improved visibility and for hygienic reasons (keeping hair out of the surgical area), we recommend that you shave from the base of the penis and along front and sides of your scrotum. Avoid dry shaving; do it while showering.
While we could easily perform your procedure without having you shave at all, we believe that this is an important step in performing a meticulous surgery.
The Day of Your Vasectomy
Wear the athletic support from your premium services pack to the office. The support should be worn over your underwear. If you are having a same day consult and procedure, you can purchase the after care supply pack with scrotal support and put it on at the office.
Wear comfortable clothing. Choose pants that you won’t mind getting iodine on after the procedure.
We also recommend that you wear a T-shirt because the room in which we do the procedure is hot and anything heavier may be uncomfortable for you. The heat of the room relaxes the scrotum and makes the procedure easier to perform. You can imagine yourself on the beach on a southern vacation.
Eat a good breakfast! You will feel much more comfortable during the procedure. Minimize coffee, but have one if skipping it causes you material stress.
Plan to arrive a little earlier for your appointment. From the time that you arrive at the office until the you leave, 45 minutes will generally suffice. However, we suggest that you give yourself an hour as you may choose to stay longer and relax after your procedure.
Should you choose the online registration option, you can purchase the optional care package at our office on the day of your surgery. We will provide you with everything you will need to take care of yourself in the days following your procedure.
Please remember to bring your favourite music to listen to during your surgery. Alternatively we will have a selection of background music to play.

Air Pressure Anesthetic Injector
Our staff will usher you into one of the surgical rooms.
You are not required to fully undress; you just need to lower your pants, lie back on the table and relax – enjoy the music.
One of our staff will place an elastic band around your penis to bring it out of the operative field, wash the scrotal area with iodine solution and place surgical towels on your body.
Our doctor will administer the anesthetic with our air jet applicator. It is then time for the actual vasectomy, which takes just a few minutes, with some variation depending on your anatomy.
